Principal’s Message

Jog-A-Thon

Get your running shoes on for the McNear Jog-A-Thon coming up April 1, 2010. We are very excited about this new event that should bring support and fun to McNear. We had a school-wide assembly on March 4 to explain the details to the students, but I wanted to highlight them to you as well.

The Jog-A-Thon will raise money to support Art and Technology in the school this year. We are looking at bringing more of both resources directly into the classroom. To participate in this project, students need to collect sponsors for the run. There are two important guidelines we asked students to remember while collecting sponsors: (1) always go out with an adult, and (2) only collect sponsors from adults they know. We also talked about two types of sponsorships. Students can be sponsored by the lap or with a flat rate. It will be easier for your child if they can get pre-paid flat-rate sponsors when possible so they don't need to return to collect.

Students were very excited when we talked about this event on Thursday. We have some student incentives like the ipod/bike raffle, the guess-how-many-laps large pizza, the first class with complete paperwork ice cream party, and the prized class cup pizza party for the class raising the most funds. With good participation from McNear families, this fundraiser should make a significant difference in the day to day education of  your children. The money raised will go directly to things used in the classroom with students.

In a time when schools' budgets look precarious, the effort these fundraisers require could be worth the energy and a huge benefit to our students. Please do what you can to encourage and support your students in participating in the Jog-A-Thon. We know that working together we can continue to improve our children's education even in times like these.

Onward,

Jason

Please Sign In/Out at Office

Anytime you come on campus, either to work in a classroom or pick up your child early, you MUST sign in/out in the office. If you are picking up your child from class early, be sure to come to the office and do not go directly to the class; we will have you sign out your child and we will call the classroom to have your child meet you in the office. If you are going to be working in the classroom, we need to have you sign in and wear a Volunteer/Visitor nametag. McNear students know to look for nametags on adults who are on campus; they know that any adult wearing a nametag has signed in at the office and that they are a “safe” visitor. For safety, and for the protection of all the students, PLEASE follow these procedures. If you get to school a little early on a Wednesday and decide to have lunch with your child, a quick stop in the office to sign in a put on a nametag is all that it takes. Yard duty supervisors are checking with all adults who are on the yard with students to make sure they are wearing nametags. If a yard duty asks you to come to the office to sign in, please understand it is being done with the safety of our children in mind. If you don’t want to put on a nametag, please wait on benches near the classrooms; please do not come onto the yard. Thank you for your support in assuring the safety of our students.

Reserved Parking

You may have noticed the new “Reserved Parking” sign at the front of the school and wondered what it was for. That parking spot has been part of the silent auction for the annual Friends of McNear fund raiser; people bid on the space and the highest bidders “own” that parking space for the month - or whatever time frame they bid; it is for their exclusive use during that time. This is a great fund raiser for McNear, and a fun part of the silent auction. Please do not park in the “Reserved Parking” space!

Note From Janis Phillips

As many of you now know I am leaving McNear at the end of this week. It is by far one of the toughest decisions I have ever made. As I told all the students, it’s not because I want to but because I have to. I will be taking a full time job as an administrative assistant for Panorama Organic Grass-Fed Meats in the old school district building downtown.

As a single mom I need to do what is best for me and my son but knowing it is the right decision for us doesn’t mean that it is any easier to leave the place that has captured my heart. When I came to McNear a little over a year ago I was graciously welcomed into the community and I value the relationships that I have built with the staff, the students and their families. Since I live in town I’m sure I will still see many of you in the grocery store or at the park.

McNear is a special place and I will certainly be back to visit when I can. If I get my way, I will be back in a few years as a parent as well. Thank you so much to all of you for being the wonderful students and friends that you are. I will miss you.

Janis Phillips
